Where's the BASS? First you should rule out any Phase Cancellation problems that may exist in your system. When this variable is eliminated from the equation, there are primarily two factors left that could cause this effect in your vehicle. Since sound waves are nothing more than moving air, any reduction in the AIR FLOW from the trunk will result in a reduction of the bass response in the passenger compartment. This can be accomplished by removing some insulation or other acoustically opaque materials from behind the rear seats, under the rear deck or beneath the rear package tray.
If this is not possible, the only other way to overcome this problem is to create an opening in the acoustically opaque material between the trunk and the passenger compartment that is causing the AIR FLOW restriction. In most cases the back deck is the easiest area to create this type of opening. The opening can be in the form of a matrix of small holes, one or more ports, ducts or vents.
Since the object is to increase AIR FLOW, the opening should be as large as possible without compromising the integrity of the vehicle. With this opening s in the acoustically opaque material the Bass Response will pass through other acoustically transparent materials such as foam or cloth found in the rear seats, package tray or rear deck areas.
If the opening is visible, it can be covered with a cosmetic grill or a custom rear deck. This process requires custom install skills and we recommend that you consult with a qualified installation professional or have the work done by an Authorized SAS Dealer.
What Do I Get? There is a Remedy! What makes this application a little tricky is that Bose uses low impedance speakers 0. Also the signal from the Bose head unit to their amplifiers is not what one would typically considered speaker level or line level.
It actually falls below what is normally considered to be line level. This makes the signal a little difficult to use to drive the inputs of most amplifiers on the market.
The output from the Bose amplifiers however, is in the 3 Volt range. That puts it at the very bottom of the Amplified Bazooka speaker level input sensitivity which if used, may not leave you with much adjustment on the LEVEL control. To avoid this potential problem we recommend that you drive the low level inputs of the Amplified Bazooka with the high level outputs of the Bose amplifiers. This is accomplished by cutting the RCA connectors off of the Amplified Bazooka's low level input leads, and using the Blue wires as the positive leads and the White wires as negative leads.
Tie into the high level leads of one right and one left Bose speaker. These high level leads are located inside each enclosure just behind the speaker.
Make your connections to these wires and run them out of each enclosure to the Amplified Bazooka inputs. This configuration will allow you to have much greater control over the bass level adjustment and still take full advantage of the Amplified Bazooka's balanced input circuitry.
Check the Fuse First make sure that the slave output fuse is installed and not blown. If blown replace the fuse with one of the same value and retest slave unit. If the fuse blows again, disconnect and check the slave unit. Checking the Wiring Determine whether or not the Amplified Bazooka slave output wires are working properly. This can be tested by connecting the slave output wires to a speaker that you know is functional.
If the test speaker plays, the wiring is not the problem. Check the slave unit. If the test speaker does not play, the problem may be in the wire harness itself. To test the wire harness you need an ohm meter or some type of continuity checking device. Using your meter, check the "slave" output wires for continuity between the plug end and the loose end of each wire. If there is no continuity on one of the "slave" output wires, a faulty wire or connection in the harness or the in-line fuse holder is the problem.
If the test speaker will not play and the wire harness checks out, then the problem is in the amplifier and it should be returned for service. Check the Bazooka Slave Unit If the test speaker plays when connected to the Amplified Bazooka Slave Outputs, and the Slave unit will not, then the problem in the slave unit. This could be caused by a bad terminal cup, a connection between the terminal cup and the woofer or something in the woofer itself.
You can return the unit for service or if you feel up to it, remove the woofer and check the internal connections, using the following instructions.
Checking the enclosure connections To check the possibility that one of the wires inside the slave unit may have come loose, you will need a 2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the speaker from the Bass Tubes enclosure.
Be careful not to damage the speaker or it's gasket while removing the speaker from the Bass Tubes enclosure. Once you have removed the speaker check the connections at the terminal cup and at the woofer to make sure they are in place. If you find a terminal that is not connected, reconnect it and make sure that it has a tight fit.
Reinstall the woofer and check the unit again, it should play properly. If the wiring appears to be in good order and the slave unit will not play, it is possible that the problem lies in the speaker itself. The Amplified Bazooka is now operating under a 2 ohm load and is delivering a total of watts. Be sure to use a slave unit that is the same size as your amplified unit. Adjusting The Crossover The built-in crossover on the Amplified Bazooka is a 18dB per octave electronic low pass filter, it has a 50Hz to Hz variable crossover point.
Select the crossover point that best suits your system design. Set the potentiometer labeled XOVER to the point you selected, 50Hz being all the way to the left counter-clockwise and Hz being all the way to the right clockwise. This is the level control.
Start with the level control turned all the way to the left counter-clockwise. The bass should be off or very low at this point. Turn up your head unit until the sound from the existing speakers starts to clip or distort.
This is the point in your system where you will get maximum volume with the least amount of distortion. With the head unit at this point, turn the level control up counter-clockwise slowly until the bass volume blends well with the existing high frequency speakers.
Now that the level is set, you may want to go back to the crossover control and adjust the crossover point by ear to meet the desired sonic quality of your system design.
Adjusting Level Control Locate the knob above the wire harness of the A30 amplifier. With your favorite music playing, turn up your head unit until the sound from the existing speakers starts to clip or distort. With the head unit at this point, turn the Bazooka level control up counter-clockwise slowly until the bass volume blends well with the existing high frequency speaker level.
Adjusting the TA Crossover The built-in crossover on the Amplified Bazooka is a 12dB per octave electronic low pass filter, it has a 50Hz to Hz variable crossover point.
Select a crossover point that best suits your system design. Set the potentiometer labeled XOVER to the point you selected, 50Hz being all the way to the right clockwise and Hz being all the way to the left counter-clockwise. Start with the level control turned all the way to the right clockwise.
